Magical Garden

Happy Holidays from the Magical Garden. We've just celebrated our one year anniversary! We are thankful for the opportunity to serve you this past year.

This issue of the newsletter includes:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Forcing bulbs
In a few weeks the blooms of summer will be long forgotten in the cold and gray of this season. Combat those winter grays with bulbs, brought indoors and "persuaded" to bloom a little early. These make a great gift to brighten someone's holiday or just to light up your own home.
Many bulbs can be chilled then brought in where it is warm to be tricked into thinking it is spring. It is a little late in the season to chill them yourself but many garden centers sell prechilled bulbs and there are a few that don't need chilling: narcissus, and amaryllis. Daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths can be found for sale now labelled "good for forcing", meaning they are prechilled.
Our favorite bulb to force is the narcissus or paperwhite because of the simple sweet white flowers, the ease of success, and the heavenly fragrance. You will have these blooming in 3-5 weeks.
1) Materials needed: undrained, decorative bowl, pebbles (or gravel, coarse sand, or similar material), the bulbs, and water.
2) Fill the decorative bowl with pebbles to reach about 1 inch below the top. Add water to almost the top of the pebbles. Place the bulbs on top and fill in with more pebbles to cover the bottom quarter of the bulbs.
3) Keep in a cool (50-60 degrees F) spot in low light until they are well rooted and the shoots appear (2-3 weeks). Then bring into direct sunlight until they begin to bloom. After that move out of direct sun. Carefully maintain the water level to just below the bulbs.
4) Enjoy! These will only last one year so discard them after they bloom. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ New Products!
